e-halo
Amazon needed a single, authoritative source of truth for packaging specifications across their Fresh and Private Brands portfolio. This data underpins:
- Tracking progress against sustainability commitments
- Meeting expanding global compliance obligations, including EPR and PPWR
- Ensuring accurate onpack recycling labelling across six countries
But Amazon’s existing approach lacked the depth and automation required. They needed:
- Granular, componentlevel packaging data to illuminate risks and assure accuracy
- Automated recyclability evaluation, removing manual calculation and errorprone spreadsheets
- Real-time insight to respond quickly to shifting legislation and rising compliance fees
Aura designed and executed a complete implementation plan, collaborating closely with Amazon’s sustainability and packaging teams to:
1. Capture Granular Data at Scale
Using e-halo, Aura’s packaging data management platform, Amazon could capture component level data for thousands of SKUs, with more than 60 attributes stored per packaging element. This granularity futureproofed Amazon’s ability to analyse, forecast, and adapt across markets.
2. Automate Recyclability Evaluation Across Markets
The platform automatically analysed over 10.3 quintillion potential packaging combinations to determine recyclability outcomes – instantly identifying banned or at risk materials in six European countries.
This eliminated manual interpretation, ensured consistency, and dramatically increased accuracy compared to human evaluation.
3. Centralize Packaging Intelligence
Aura led the full migration of Amazon’s packaging data into e-halo, creating one unified, validated, real time dataset for:
- Recyclability calculation
- Compliance reporting
- On pack labeling ruleset validation
- Deploy Automated Reporting & Compliance Dashboards
4. A suite of configurable reports enabled Amazon to:
- Produce audit ready compliance documentation instantly
- Monitor recyclability rates and packaging risks
- Forecast EPR driven costs and fees
Aura helped to implement a full reporting suite to guide Amazon on compliance across multiple markets, instant calculations of recyclability and inform end-of-life labelling by market.
As a result, we were able to offer:
- Instant, automated recyclability intelligence. Amazon can now evaluate recyclability across multiple countries in seconds, replacing slow manual assessments.
- Accuracy through unmatched data granularity. Component level visibility ensures every packaging decision is supported by precise, empirical data – reducing compliance risk and improving the reliability of sustainability reporting.
- Time savings through automation. Automated data capture, validation and reporting significantly reduces time spent on manual data gathering and regulatory interpretation.
By consolidating all packaging data into a single intelligent platform, Amazon is better equipped to scale sustainability practices, reduce compliance risk, and meet its ambitious environmental commitments.
